University of Tartu Foundation’s new strategy sets the aim to increase the impact of the foundation and to engage more alumni

On 23 July, the supervisory board of the University of Tartu Foundation approved the foundation’s strategy for 2025–2035. The strategy focuses on expanding the University of Tartu endowment fund, engaging alumni and the wider public, increasing the impact of scholarships and awards, strengthening partnerships, improving visibility, and enhancing organisational and risk management.

Technology company Wise once again awards an outstanding female student at the University of Tartu

The Wise scholarship, awarded at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Tartu, was awarded to Yucui Wu, a master's student in the computer science curriculum, whose homeland is China. The 2,000-euro scholarship is aimed at outstanding female students in the field of technology, offering them support in their education and encouraging women to explore career opportunities in technology.

Lennart Meri awards went to Timo Aava and Hegle Pärna

On 21 February, at the Independence Day ceremony in the University of Tartu assembly hall, the recipients of the Lennart Meri award for research and the Lennart Meri award for master’s thesis were announced. The 6,000-euro award for research went to Timo Aava for his doctoral thesis in history, and the 4,000-euro award to Hegle Pärna for her master’s thesis in law.

Professor Peeter Tulviste memorial fund prize went to Uku Tooming

On 21 February, the Peeter Tulviste memorial fund prize was presented at the ceremony marking the Republic of Estonia’s anniversary at the University of Tartu. The 5,000-euro prize was awarded to Research Fellow in Theoretical Philosophy Uku Tooming, whose research focuses on understanding the cultural nature of humans.

Ernst Jaakson memorial fund scholarship was awarded to Research Fellow in Materials Science Kristjan Kalam

On 21 February, the recipient of this year’s Ernst Jaakson memorial fund scholarship was announced at the ceremony of the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in the University of Tartu assembly hall. The 18,000-euro scholarship was awarded to Kristjan Kalam, a Research Fellow in Materials Science at the Institute of Physics.

The 2024 Valda and Bernard Õun Memorial Fund Scholarship Recipient is Keerthana Chithanathan

The Valda and Bernard Õun Memorial Fund was established to support and recognize biomedical research at the University of Tartu. This year, the €5,000 scholarship was awarded to Keerthana Chithanathan, a 4th-year PhD student in neuroscience at the University of Tartu, whose research focuses on the roles of microRNA-146 (miR-146a and miR-146b) in brain health, specifically in relation to neuroinflammation, neurogenesis, and microglial function.
