An Inspiring Journey in Tech: Interview with Wise Scholarship Recipient Mirelle Malle Soodla
Mirelle Malle Soodla, a first-year computer science student at the University of Tartu, was awarded the 2024 Wise Scholarship. Mirelle's story is one of combining her passion for technology and art, overcoming personal challenges, and pursuing ambitious projects. In our interview, she shared insights about her journey, the impact of the scholarship, and her future plans.
What inspired you to study computer science?
In high school, we had the option to choose our focus area, and technology seemed the most interesting to me. I enjoyed programming and felt that it offered a unique opportunity to create something new. I also knew some of the professors beforehand, and their guidance gave me a better understanding of how exciting this field could be. When applying to the University of Tartu, I considered both computer science and computer engineering. In the end, computer science aligned better with my interests, and I’m very happy with my choice.
How does this scholarship affect your current studies and daily life?
Without the scholarship, I had to worry about covering my dormitory costs and needed to work to make ends meet. The scholarship provides me with the security to fully focus on my studies and projects. It gives me the confidence to invest in a better computer, which is essential for developing my platform for artists. This support allows me to take my studies more seriously and dedicate more time to a project that is very dear to me.
Can you tell us more about your project focused on creating a platform for artists’ portfolios?
The idea came from my own experience when applying to universities. I had to create a portfolio, but no one really taught me how to do it properly. The fields of art are so diverse, and often the focus is more on traditional painting rather than animation, which is what I was interested in. While assembling my portfolio, I struggled to find someone who could give me feedback on whether it was good enough for a specific university. My goal is to create a platform where artists can share their portfolios and receive feedback from other artists or university professionals who have gone through the application process. This would help candidates who need quick and professional feedback, and it could also simplify the application process.
At the moment, the project is still in the idea phase. I have discussed it with some of my classmates and am looking for people who would like to join. I also talked to my brother, who has experience in app development and can guide me. I hope we can soon start building a prototype and find team members interested in contributing to the project.
You mentioned that your greatest achievement is gaining independence. What does that mean to you?
I have always considered myself independent, but true independence came when I had to leave home and take control of my life. It was a big step because I grew up in a traditional family where my desire for independence was not always supported. I had to learn how to ask, and who to ask for help as well as who would truly support me. I’ve built a strong social network and found people who are there for me and help me with the challenges of becoming independent. This experience has taught me a lot about taking responsibility and developing communication skills.
How do you see your future in the tech industry? Is there a specific direction you want to pursue?
Right now, I have so many ideas that I haven’t chosen a specific direction yet. I’m interested in self-driving cars and video games, especially those designed as educational tools. I believe that video games are a great way to teach people, and this is something I would love to work on in the future. I’m also very keen on animation and artificial intelligence, which is developing rapidly. I see great potential in combining different fields of technology to create something entirely new and useful.
What does receiving the Wise Scholarship mean to you, and what do you hope to achieve with this experience?
The scholarship gives me confidence and courage. I want to inspire more women to enter the tech field and show that there are plenty of opportunities here for those willing to work hard.
I know girls who think they don’t need to pursue a career, but I believe every woman has the potential to achieve something great if she finds a field that truly interests her. I’m very grateful to have received this scholarship; it shows that my dedication has been recognized, and I feel like I truly deserve it.
Do you think scholarships are only given to the best students, or what is important when applying for a scholarship?
I don’t think you have to be the best student, but showing passion for your field and being willing to put in the effort is important. Even if your results are not always the best, it’s crucial to demonstrate commitment. Many people who achieve outstanding results may still feel insecure inside because they are constantly striving for improvement and not giving themselves enough room to fail to learn from their mistakes when they should accept that they do not need to be perfect in every single way. Although receiving the scholarship was a surprise, I feel that I have worked hard this year, and I am very thankful. It means a lot to me, and I believe I truly deserve this recognition.
