The 2025 Estonian Maritime Museum Scholarship
Scholarship description:
The aim of the scholarship is to support future scholars in the research fields of the Estonian Maritime Museum, to promote the study of Estonian maritime history and maritime heritage, to encourage the production of high-quality original research, and to foster the next generation of researchers in maritime history and maritime archaeology.
Research areas supported by the Scholarship are related to Estonian and/or Baltic Sea maritime history or maritime and inland water archaeology, including but not limited to the following topics:
- Economic and social maritime activities (maritime trade, seafaring, harbors and hydraulic engineering structures, maritime transport systems, shipping, sailors and the maritime labor force (including topics such as women at sea, minorities in ship crews, etc.), passenger and cruise shipping, ship and other watercraft construction, maritime enterprises and their networks, and maritime technology);
- Maritime communities and marine tourism (maritime regions, islands, port cities, fisheries and other marine products, leisure activities at sea);
- Geopolitics, war and violence at sea (maritime law, international and national maritime policy and institutions, maritime empires, naval warfare and navies, piracy);
- History of maritime sciences (history of oceanography, hydrography, geographical discoveries, navigation technology and the development of maritime education);
- Maritime culture (intangible and material maritime heritage, maritime-related literature, art, and music).
Number and amount of scholarships:
One scholarship of 7,500 euros. The scholarship is awarded for three semesters and disbursed in monthly installments of 500 euros.
Application requirements:
The Scholarship may be applied for by master’s students at the University of Tartu, Tallinn University, or the Estonian Academy of Arts who:
- are Estonian citizens, or are residing in Estonia on the basis of a long-term resident status, temporary residence permit, permanent or temporary right of residence, visa, or visa-free regime (if such agreement has been concluded with a foreign country or if visa requirements have been waived), or who have applied for a temporary residence permit for study purposes;
- are enrolled in full-time master’s studies at the time of the competition.
Preference will be given to students in the fields of history, archaeology, ethnology, museology, art history, heritage conservation, and restoration.
The Scholarship holder is required to complete an internship at the Estonian Maritime Museum during their studies.
The award of the Scholarship is based on the motivation letter, the supervisor’s recommendation, and the master’s thesis proposal.

- Master’s thesis proposal including the objective, research questions, sources, methods, structure, and expected value of the thesis (to be uploaded under the additional files section).
