Tartu Raefond Scholarship 2026

Scholarship Description:

The aim of the scholarship is to motivate undergraduate and graduate students of the University of Tartu to plan a research or thesis that addresses the challenges of the city of Tartu or city-related developments in relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The following focus topics are included:
  • Eliminating poverty
  • Eliminating hunger
  • Good health and well-being
  • Quality education
  • Gender equality
  • Clean water and sanitation
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Decent work and economic growth
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Reducing inequalitySustainable cities and communities
  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Climate action
  • Ocean and marine ecosystems
  • Biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems
  • Peace, law enforcement and strong institutions
  • Global cooperation to achieve the goals
  • Culture

Number and size of scholarships:

Up to ten scholarships of 1,500 euros.

Application requirements:

Bachelor's and Master's students of the University of Tartu can apply for the scholarship based on an essay describing the plan of their research or thesis.

The scholarship recipient must be prepared to prepare a summary of their research or thesis, upon request by the City of Tartu, which will be published at the discretion of the City of Tartu.

When deciding to award the scholarship, the level of the essays will be compared, the importance of the research or thesis topic for the City of Tartu and the applicant's academic success will be assessed, and the information provided in the letter of recommendation will be taken into account. The scholarship will be awarded for research or thesis that is most important for the City of Tartu.

To apply, you must submit an electronic scholarship application, including:

  • a free-form essay describing the topic of the research or thesis, its connection to the challenges or developments of the city of Tartu, and a plan for preparing the research or thesis during your studies (add the essay to the block); 
  • a letter of recommendation from a lecturer; 
  • a transcript of records (ask from your curriculum academic affairs specialist).
